Director ID Will Soon Be Mandatory Before You Can Become A Director

As you may already be aware, company directors are required to apply for a Director Identification Number (Director ID) from the Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS).

A Director ID is a unique identifier that a director will apply for once and use for their lifetime. The director will use the same Director ID for all companies that they are a director of.

This applies, but is not limited, to Corporations Act companies (e.g. Pty Ltd or Ltd companies). When you must apply for a Director ID depends on when you were appointed as a director:

If you were already a director of an existing company prior to 1 November 2021 and become a director of another company after 31 October 2021, then you still have until 30 November 2022 to apply for your Director ID.

Application for a Director ID is done through Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS). The application requires an identification procedure which is simplified if the director has an Australian myGovID and makes the application through the links in their myGovID app. If the director does not have a myGovID the process may take some time to complete (especially if the director is an international director).

Law Central encourages all existing directors to go through the application process sooner rather than later to ensure that the relevant deadlines are met.

Full details of the application process can be found on the ABRS website. Please note that the directors need to personally apply for their Director ID. Applications cannot be lodged through an agent.
